When is Online Counselling for you?
Online counselling is useful if it’s difficult for you to make an appointment for face to face counselling because of
- Time constraints
- Distance (in a rural or remote area, or overseas)
- Disability
- Concern for anonymity (eg not wanting anyone to know you are accessing counselling)
- Costs of child care, travel, time off work, etc
Online counselling is not advisable if
- You are in a crisis situation
- Your personal safety is at risk (eg domestic violence or suicide)
If so, we advise you to access appropriate support services
Some issues to be aware of:
- Without the visual signs of humour, feeling, etc it may lead to misunderstandings. Also, you or your counsellor would say more in a face to face situation than you do when you are typing.
- Sometimes situations are too complex to explain in text messages – you may need to have telephone counselling instead.
If you are not sure about online counselling you may prefer face to face, or telephone counselling.
